Admissions

Admission to the B.A degree course in Communication and Language Arts:

Qualifications for admission to the B.A degree course in Communication and Language Arts are generally the same as for other B.A. degree courses in the Faculty of Arts. However, the Department admits students with credits in social sciences or Arts subjects.

Candidates must, in addition, possess an Ordinary level credit pass in Literature-in-English and in two other Arts subjects. For candidates seeking admission through the University Matriculation Examinations (UME), it is mandatory to take, in addition to English Language, two Arts subjects including Literature-in-English, as UME subjects.

Such students are admitted into a four-year programme leading to the award of a B.A degree in Communication and Language Arts. The Department also admits students who have Ordinary National Diploma (OND) or National Certificate of Education (NCE) to a three-year degree programme. Students seeking admission are usually invited for a short written test and an oral interview.

UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMME IN COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE ARTS

The B.A. degree in Communication and Language Arts, which may be awarded either as an honours degree or as a pass degree, is specifically designed to equip students with both the theoretical background and the practical training which will enable them to:

  • Have a deeper understanding of the challenges of communicating in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual country like Nigeria.
  • Effectively devise and direct both remedial and developmental language arts programmes in English, and apply these, as far as possible, to written Nigerian or other languages in which there is literature.

Career Opportunities

  • School or College teachers of English Language Arts, specialising in remedial or developmental work in reading and learning, in speech communication, or in creative writing.
  • Independent professional writers of popular books, articles or stories, children's books, novels, plays and/or other literary genres.
  • Book publishers, editors in publishing houses and Book Development Centres.
  • Practitioners in the Media - print and broadcast
  • Practitioners in Public Relations and Advertising
  • Communication Consultants
