Linkage Programme with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville SIUE
The Department of English has participated in the Colleges and Universities Affliation Program (CUAP), a linkage programme involving the University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria and Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville (SIUE) since 2002. For three years - 2002-2004 - two lecturers from the department went to Edwardsville in the company of two other lecturers and a postgraduate student and spent an average of six weeks there to observe the system in SIUE. These visits involved participation in formal lectures and interaction with lecturers and other members of staff in various units of SIUE. They also visited institutions outside Edwardsville and participated in cultural events outside SIUE. In 2003 and 2004 the scholars from UI participated in the conferences of the Mid-America Alliance for African Studies (MAAS) in Lawrence (Kansas) and Edwardsville (Illinois) respectively. The visits to SIUE were preceded each year by the visit to UI of a team of scholars from SIUE. The American scholars used this time for a group research that involved fieldwork in Northern Edo State. Some of the Ibadan participants in CUAP collaborated in this research. This programme has paved the way for broader cooperation between UI and SIUE with many members of staff of UI, MacArthur Grant awardees, going to SIUE where they do useful research and management attachment. It is hoped that the University of Ibadan will ensure that the programme is revived and expanded.
