"Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." - Plato
HOD

Message and Remarks from the HOD - Dr. C.O. Adesina
The study of History is designed to prepare the student for meaningful living within his society by developing in him/her a proper sense of history, a knowledge of how and why things are as they are; the social, economic, religious, psychological, political forces which have been influential in determining major events in human history. The aim is to promote and deepen understanding with a view to promoting tolerance, accommodation and respect for other people's situations. Basically, we seek to achieve this and by exposing our students to studies of their own immediate environment (Nigeria) as well as studies of their race (Africa) and the wider world, selecting in the process important historical developments in the world. Marxist science, indispensable to the knowledge of the contemporary world of imperialism and underdevelopment has been incorporated in our programme. Our Special Subjects and the Long Essay are designed to expose the undergraduate to the rudiments of historical source materials and research. The teaching is done with emphasis on the development of the mind. Thus it is not so much how the student remembers as how well he understands history that determines his level of performance. Our aim is to produce minds that are reflective, analytical; graduates who can look at evidence and reach mature and ordered judgment. It is significant to note that the Department of History has adopted a strategic development plan designed to refocus and re-position it for the challenges of the 21st century. Towards this end, a number of 3-units undergraduate courses covering a wide range of interests and contemporary themes have been put in place. At the postgraduate level, new M.A. degree courses have been introduced for candidates who have special interests beyond the M.A. programme.
