Admission Requirements
Programme Title: B.A. (Hons.) History
(i) For direct admission into the History programme at Ibadan, students are required to have passes in History and in another subject in the Humanities/Social Sciences at the GCE Level or in an equivalent examination (e.g. NCE), in addition to five credit passes including English at the GCE 'O' Level or in the SSCE.
(ii) For admission through UME, students are required to have credit passes in History and English, and in two other subjects in the Humanities/Social Sciences, Government may be accepted in lieu of History.
POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES (M.A, Mphil, PhD)
ENTRY RQUIREMENTS, DURATION AND REGISTRATION
M.A. PROGRAMME
Candidates for admission to the programme shall normally be holders of Bachelor of Arts degree in History of the University of Ibadan or of similar degrees of other universities recognised by Senate. However, graduates in related disciplines may also be considered.A candidate shall be required to register for a minimum of 30 units and a maximum of 45. The duration of the M.A. in History is a minimum of 3 semesters.
To qualify for the award of the M.A degree in History, candidates must be credited with 30 units made up as follows:
HIS 701 - Problems of Theories and Methods of History (Compulsory) - 3 units
HIS 712 - Nigeria; problems of Building a Nation (compulsory) 3 units
HIS 789 - Seminar in African History - (Compulsory) 2 units
Other 700 level courses in History - 13 units
One External Elective (Archaeology, Religious Studies, Political Science
or African Studies) 3 units
HIS 799 M.A. Project (Compulsory) - 6 units

The Pass Mark shall be 40%
Candidate may, with the permission of the Head of Department or Postgraduate Co-ordinator register for a maximum of 3 units in a related field outside the Department as part of the requirement for the award of the M.A degree. Students must submit transcript or note of their interviews in a separate notebook or file at the same time that they submit their dissertation. Each interview must indicate the full name of informant, place of interview and date. These notebooks and/or files will form part of the department's data collection, which may be used by other students and scholars on condition that they be adequately acknowledged.
