Linguistics & African Languages

"When all think alike, no one is thinking very much." - Walter Lippmann

Student Association

Linguistics Students’ Association (LINSA)

An association of students of linguistics at Ibadan was founded in April 1980 under the name Linguistics Students’ Association (LINSA). Mr Akintola Olu-Arikawe and Mr S. O. Oyetade were its founding President and Secretary respectively.

The Association is comprised of a lawmaking congress, a press that manages information and an executive leadership. All bona fide undergraduate and masters’ students of Linguistics constitute the LINSA Congress.

LINSA is founded on the following objectives:

-         To provide an effective students’ governing body at the level of the department.

-         To promote good interaction among students, and between students and staff (and university authorities).

-         To protect the interest of members.

-         To create a forum for social, cultural, intellectual and moral integration.

-         To develop humane spirit among members by learning to work with people irrespective of their nationality, sex, religion or political convictions.

Every year we organize talks, workshops and seminars to keep students abreast with the possibilities that linguistics presents. Our focus in the last couple of years has been on how linguistics fits into the fast changing world of Information Technology. We also organize a dinner and awards night at the end of every academic year.

Since 1980, we have grown from strength to strength because we know that, “no matter the number of organs of speech, they work together to produce one sound at a time”.

Yoruba Students’ Association of Nigeria (YOSAN)
